Prepare for Higher Home Heating Costs

The City of Summerville urges its customers to prepare for higher home heating costs this winter.  Natural gas prices are on the rise as hurricane-battered Gulf of Mexico supplies are limited and consumer demands grow.  These increased reflect only the rise of wholesale commodity fuel prices, which are passed on to consumers, not the total cost.  Utilities are actively taking steps to reduce the impact of wholesale natural gas prices on consumers, but are urging consumers to take measures NOW to mitigate their personal home heating costs.

Here are some energy saving to help get you started:

  • Install a programmable setback thermostat to control heating costs without sacrificing comfort.  Lower the temperature setting at night and when you are not at home.
  • Check you furnace filter frequently and replace or clean it as needed
  • Add a humidifier-moist air feels warmer.
  • Adjust the register openings-remember heat rises, so you may want to partially close upstairs registers.
  • Keep window coverings open on sunny days to let in the sun's warmth.  Close them to insulate against colder air at night.
  • Use kitchen, bath and other ventilating fans sparingly in cold weather.  In just one hour, these fans can blow away a houseful of warm  air.
